After working for more than 25 years in professional sports, Chuck Heeman, along with his wife Mayra, founded the Pioneers in August 2017, leading up to our inaugural 2018 Championship season.
Chuck has served as General Manager for four professional baseball teams as well serving as the founding General Manager with two Oregon-based summer collegiate baseball teams, the Klamath Falls Gems and Medford Rogues. Chuck also served four years as Operations Manager with the Arizona Diamondbacks. His sports experience also includes three years with the Cleveland Indians and Cincinnati Reds at their Goodyear, Arizona Spring Training complex immediately prior to purchasing the Pioneers franchise.
Chuck, age 66 and getting too old for all this nonsense, is also a disabled veteran of the U. S. Air Force, a 13-year former U.S. Postal Service worker and a graduate of Arizona State University. Born in Detroit, Michigan, Chuck grew up in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio. He is married to Mayra Heeman. The couple has four children and six grandchildren and resides in Gering, Nebraska.
Chuck is proud to serve on the Tourism Advisory Committee and Executive Subcommittee for the Scotts Bluff County Visitors Bureau. To find out what Scotts Bluff County has to offer, please click HERE. Chuck is also the Scotts Bluff County representative of the Western Nebraska Tourism Coalition. To find out more about the coalition, click HERE.

Mayra, the retired mother of four and grandmother of six, volunteers her spare time to help the Pioneers in a number of ways. She recruits and works with host families and helps with business operations. Following a heart attack, quintuple bypass and stroke in the fall of 2018, Mayra has cut back on her baseball duties and is restricted by management from doing too much. Fans and friends are encouraged to tell Mayra to slow down!
Due to past... let's say... "incidents"... Mayra is not allowed to sit and watch games in which she is not working (she gets a little intense - some stories there if you'd like to hear). However, Mayra is always ready with a smile and a hug at Pios games and loves to spend time with the fans.
Mayra served for five years as a volunteer with the Klamath Falls Gems and Medford Rogues (both in Oregon) where her husband served as General Manager. Prior to retirement and getting sucked into the baseball world, Mayra worked in the legal field as a litigating paralegal for law firms in California and Arizona.
A native of Mexico, Mayra came to the United States at age nine and grew up in Southern California. Mayra and Chuck Heeman were married in 2008 and moved to Gering in August 2017. The couple resides in Gering, Nebraska, where they purchased a home in April 2021. Mayra was named Grand Marshal of the 2021 Cinco de Mayo parade in Scottsbluff and also serves on the Board of Directors for Empowering Families. To find out about the organization, click HERE.

A former standout collegiate and professional player with a proven track record in player development, Vandiver brings a wealth of experience, energy, and passion to the program.
During his playing career, Vandiver established himself as one of the most dynamic and consistent performers at every level. At Lewis and Clark Community College, he posted a career batting average of .364, earning MWAC All-Conference honors in two consecutive years, and recognition as an All-Region selection. He continued his career at Wheeling University, where he became the program’s all-time leader in stolen bases, earned MEC All-Conference honors, and was recognized as an NCAA Gold Glove Finalist.
In summer competition, Vandiver gained national attention as a Senior Legion All-American and the Illinois State Senior Legion Player of the Year. His success translated seamlessly into the professional ranks, where he played three seasons and became a two-time Pecos League All-Star, followed by a year as a USPBL All-Star, finishing his pro career with a .371 batting average.
Following his playing career, Vandiver transitioned into coaching, quickly making his mark. He spent two seasons as an Assistant Coach at Lewis and Clark Community College (Illinois), worked as an Assistant Coach with the Alton River Dragons (Prospect League), and served as an Assistant Coach with the Winchester Royals (Valley League). Known for his player-first approach and relentless work ethic, Vandiver has earned respect for his ability to develop talent and instill a competitive edge in his teams.
A native of Alton, Illinois, Vandiver has long aspired to lead his own program. Now stepping into the Head Coach role, he is eager to bring the same drive and determination that defined his playing career into building a championship culture at Western Nebraska Pioneers.
“Coaching has been my passion since the day my professional career ended,” said Vandiver. “I am hungry and ready to give everything I have to this program, and I look forward to helping our players reach their full potential on and off the field.”
Pete Toula started his college career playing junior college baseball at Mercyhurst North East College (Pennsylvania) for 2 seasons. As he then transferred to Division 2 Wheeling University (West Virginia) where he played his final three seasons. Toula graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in exercise science & a minor in coaching psychology. Post college Pete began his player development/training career, operating a facility from home in Sagamore Hills, Ohio, training professional hitters and college hitters of all three divisions.
Fun fact: Coach Toula’s first signed pro client ever was newly hired Head Coach of the Pioneers Blake Vandiver.
After training players at the next level for two years, Toula began his official college coaching career in 2024, taking over the Head Assistant Coach position for Bethany College (West Virginia). Running the offense entirely, and being head of all player development, Toula took Bethany from the last place (#11) in offense in the PAC conference to the #4 offense in the conference in one season. In the summer of 2025, Coach Toula took over the offense for the Winchester Royals of the Valley Collegiate summer league. This fall he returns to Bethany College for his second year at the helm of the offense.
From Blake: “I am deeply committed to player development, bringing experience from multiple levels of the game. A former pitcher at Blinn Junior College, I continued my career in baseball as the pitching coach for the Alton River Dragons in the Prospect collegiate summer league before taking on my current role at Cy-Fair High School. His coaching philosophy goes beyond mechanics—focusing on building strong relationships, earning trust, and guiding athletes in their growth both on the mound and in life.
"Before you can develop a pitcher, you have to connect with the person. Relationships are the foundation of growth."

I am from Lansing, Illinois and am currently a sophomore at Lewis University planning to get a Bachelor of Arts in Sports Management and minors in International Business and Digital Marketing. I am so excited to be given this opportunity to work with the Pioneers to help me achieve my goal in the future to work for Major League Baseball.
At my school, I work with the game staff helping with different activities such as scorekeeping, music, and selling tickets. Growing up, I didn’t for sure know I wanted to work in sports until I was about 16 years old. I played softball my whole life and finally knew that is what I wanted to do with my future. Since I play softball, I knew baseball was the world I wanted to go into. I love other sports such as soccer, pickleball, bags, etc. but baseball was what called to me. Now it is my dream to work for the MLB and have fans come to the game and be able to enjoy their experience.
